A Study on the Trends in the Application of the Grounded Theory in the Counseling Field: Analysis of papers published in Korean domestic academic journals (2011-2020)

|
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze trends in the field of counseling published in Korean domestic journals from 2011 to 2020.
Methods: 77 papers published in the Korean journals within the counseling field (Korean Psychological Association - Counseling and Psychotherapy; Counseling Connections; Family and Family Therapy) were chosen for the analysis.
Results: First, the number of the published papers was 8 in 2011 and decreased afterward until 2014. Then it showed an increasing trend after 2015. 50 (65%) of analyzed papers were published in Counseling Connections, 21 (27.2%) in Korean Psychological Association - Counseling and Psychotherapy, and 6 (7.8%) in Family and Family Therapy. Second, the main research topics were overcoming processes of trauma/difficulty with 20 (26%) papers, personality characteristics and adjustment processes of the participants with 19 (24.6%), counsellors¡¯ experiences and supervision with 14 (18.2%), counseling processes and outcomes with 11 (14.3%), job or career related counseling with 9 (11.7%), and others with 4 (5,2%). Third, adults were the most studied subjects with 35 (46%) of case studies; and for the number of participants, case studies of 9 and 10 participants were respectively the most frequent at 15%. Fourth, in-depth interviews were the most widely used method in gathering data, applied in 70 papers (91%). In 57 papers the grounded theory was the main analytic tool.
Conclusions: This study provides implications and suggestions for the development of the application of the grounded theory in the field of counseling in the future.
